Dot3D 3.1 is now shipping! With this release, we not only deliver a major update to our foundational cross-platform 3D capture solution, but also unveil the official release of Dot3D Pro as our new flagship professional 3D scanning application on Windows and Android.
Dot3D Pro is now available by standalone subscription or in conjunction with our new DPI-8S and DPI-8S SR complete handheld 3D scanners. For all platforms, sensors, and variants of Dot3D, the Dot3D 3.1 update can be directly downloaded here.
Rafael Spring, DotProduct CTO and Dot3D project leader, reports that “this new software was developed from the ground up to allow customers to take advantage of rapid advances in new 3D sensors, mobile computing hardware and operating systems, while also preserving their investment in existing 3D capture and design workflows.”
New Dot3 Pro functionality includes:
- Unlimited HD photo capture during scanning from the DPI-8S/SR and Intel® RealSense
- Scale bar targeting and control targeting with checkerboard targets or AprilTag survey targets
- Import, registration, and comparison of CAD design data to DP point cloud scan data
- Append to fill and append to align functionality for targetless linking of data sets in the field
- Optional expansion of single scene capture size up to 160 million points (depends on hardware)
- Point cloud quality filter for post-processing based on real-time feedback (now DPI compatible)
- Viewing and export of HD photographs captured while scanning
Dot3D Pro replaces Phi.3D on all DPI handheld 3D scanners
Our new flagship DPI-8S and DPI-8S SR handheld 3D scanners are powered by Dot3D Pro. Phi.3D will continue to be supported but no new features will be developed for it. All DPI-8X/SR and DPI-8/SR customers on active Phi.3D Support and Maintenance contracts will now be transferred to a Dot3D Pro Maintenance Plan, and are eligible to upgrade their DPI tablet to Dot3D Pro immediately. Current DPI customers interested in the upgrade should complete this form asap. If your maintenance and support agreement is current, we will deliver the new license key and installation instructions right away. If your maintenance has lapsed, we will first deliver a quote to get you up to speed. Please note that for the time being all new units will still be delivered with both Phi.3D and Dot3D installed and activated, to minimize any disruption.
Hardware upgrades to the DPI-8S/SR are also available for all DPI customers on active maintenance contracts. The DPI-8S/SR is powered by the Samsung Tab S2 tablet with 32 GB of storage, a sleek 8.0” QXGA touchscreen display, and 3GB of RAM for larger scene capture. The new design also allows for direct access to the tablet’s 8MP camera for capture of HD photos while scanning (enabled in the new Dot3DPro) and is a lighter weight model. Dot3D Scan offers lower cost, entry-level 3D scanning on Windows
While Dot3D Pro is now the professional solution for both DPI Kits on Android and Intel® RealSense™ devices on Windows, Dot3D Scan is still also available at a lower price point for smaller-scale, entry-level Intel® RealSense™ 3D scanning needs on Windows. Click here for more info.
New functionality for Dot3D Edit on Windows and Android
This upgrade also brings new functionality into Dot3D Edit for maximum point cloud productivity. Dot3D Edit delivers rapid editing, optimization, and export of DP data on Windows and Android platforms, in the office or in the field. Strategic use of Dot3D Edit can also save precious time and battery life on the job site. Please note that with the release of Dot3D Pro and the DPI-8S/SR, we will no longer be including Dot3D Edit licenses with new DPI scanner purchases, as we have now combined the functionality of Phi.3D and Dot3D Edit into the included Dot3D Pro on Android. Separate Dot3D Editlicenses will continue to be available here at an affordable price point on Windows or Android. Existing Dot3D Edit licenses tied to past purchases will continue to be honored, but will need to be renewed upon expiration.

Dot3D View offers free viewing and measurement functionality on Windows and Android and can now be obtained directly from the DotProduct website for convenient sharing with coworkers, suppliers and customers.
